in 1978, former art students Gerd Frölich and Andreas Kaufmann launched
a mail order business for rare art catalogues that were hard to
come by. Many people interested in art who didn't have the money
or the time to visit every important exhibition in Paris, Venice
or New York, could now order the opulent retrospective catalogs
from FRÖLICH & KAUFMANN. In 1986 the business came under
the roof of Hoffmann und Campe.
Frölich & Kaufmann quickly became Europe's largest specialized mail
order supplier of art books and catalogues. When someone mentions
the "catalogue of catalogues," art lovers immediately think of the
specialists from Berlin. Be it painting or design, photography or
archeology, there is hardly a wish they cannot fulfill. Frölich
& Kaufmann have also added graphics, preferential editions, reprints
and high quality prints to their range, including work by artists
such as Christian Schad, Alfred Hrdlicka, Niki de Saint Phalle,
Christo and Tomi Ungerer. |
